How to decipher if a Scholarship offer is a scam.
When looking for scholarship and grant programs for school, please be aware of the following scams. These are the most common ones seen regarding scholarships.
- Scholarships that require you to send them money up front, and then never materialize.
- Scholarships that require an application fee.
- Advance fee loans that offer low interest rates, but require a fee prior to receiving the loan.
- Notice of winning a scholarship prize, however to redeem it you are required to pay a fee.
- The guaranteed scholarship search service, where the company promises to find you a scholarship or refund you your money.
- Watch for sales pitches that imply that a purchase must be made in order to receive a federal student loan. This practice violates federal and state laws.
- Be skeptical of free seminars regarding scholarships. These are often ploys to pitch you services that are costly.
- Grants are always free, and never have to be repaid. Be cautious of any entity that asks for bank account information in regard to grant money.
