The BBB Accredited Seal Program is an optional program available to charities which meet your BBB’s 20 Standards for Charity Accountability. Charities that wish to participate in the program must sign a license agreement and pay a licensing fee for use of the seal. Charities that opt to participate in the program may place the seal on their fundraising and informational materials.
The BBB Accredited Charity Seal is a powerful tool for connecting donors to trustworthy charities. The IRS estimates there are 8,000 charities in our region. As a result, local donors receive hundreds of direct mail solicitations and special event invitations each year. The BBB Accredited Charity Seal “takes the guess work” out of donating, by telling donors at the point of solicitation that your charity can be trusted with their donation.
The BBB Accredited Charity Seal was introduced as a way to connect donors with trustworthy charities. Since that time, the 54 local participants, and hundreds of national participants, have used this seal thousands of times on:
- direct mail solicitations and special event invitations,
- annual reports,
- information brochures and program service information, and
- charity websites.
We know donors are taking note. In 2008, your local BBB received 22,000 requests for information on 700 local charities. Of these, 31% were on the 54 BBB Accredited Charity Seal Program participants. Last year, seal program participants averaged 127 requests, compared to an average of 23 requests for charities that did not take advantage of this opportunity. Every time a donor requests your BBB Wise Giving Report, it’s another opportunity for BBB to provide unbiased information about how your charity will spend their contribution. BBB Accredited Charity Seal Program Participants had 5.5 times more opportunities to share this information than other charities last year.
