Widespread Harassment from Phony Debt Collectors Raises Concerns of Mass Data Breach, Warns BBB

Better Business Bureau is issuing a national alert today about phony debt collectors that are calling consumers nationwide and claiming that they have defaulted on a payday loan and will be arrested if they don’t pay immediately. Claiming to be lawyers, the scammers say they are with the “Financial Accountability Association” or the “Federal Legislation of Unsecured Loans” and are equipped with a disconcerting amount of personal information about their potential victims.

BBB Advises Cash-Strapped Small Business Owners Against Using Shelf Corporations to Deceive Banks and Attain Loans

While businesses find it increasingly more difficult to qualify for loans and lines of credits, small business owners are resorting to applying for loans from behind the façade of shelf corporations. Better Business Bureau is advising small business owners that, as tempting as these schemes sound, using a shelf company in order to misrepresent your credit worthiness to a bank could be considered loan fraud.

FICO 08 is here! The equation for consumer credit scores has changed.

The way consumer credit scores are calculated has changed. The Fair Isaac Corp. – creator of the FICO score – announced on January 29 that their new scoring model for determining credit scores, dubbed FICO 08, has been instituted and Better Business Bureau offers advice to consumers on how their credit score might change and what they can do to maintain a healthy credit rating.

As with the complaint we received about Dominion Pupz, he found out they were glad to take his money but not ship his puppy. This individual ordered a puppy online with Dominion Pupz which required a $500 down payment be wired to them before shipping puppy.

Better Business Bureau is warning job hunters to beware of opportunities to work from home processing rebates. While the job offer may claim that people can earn up to a thousand dollars a day without leaving the comfort of their home, BBB has received hundreds of complaints from victims nationwide who never earned a dime and were, in fact, ripped off for hundreds of dollars in upfront fees.

According to an annual report released today by Better Business Bureau, consumers filed 891,540 complaints against North American businesses in 2008, reflecting a seven percent increase over the previous year.
